Alessandro Del Piero has been crowned king of the goal-scorers in Serie A. 21 goals, one better than the other, and now he towers over all his rivals. By scoring twenty-one goals in Serie A this year he equalled his own personal record (he'd scored the same number of goals in 1997/98 and won the Serie A top scorer award for the first time in his career. To make the top scorer list even more 'black and white', David Trezeguet came in second place, with twenty goals. Congratulations to both stars! Thumbsup

Looks like getting the top scorer award may not be enough for him to get into Italy's squad for Euro 2008.

Guess it's time for the young guns to strut their stuff. The coaches probably have 1 eye on World Cup 2010, hence the need to blood the youngsters.

Latest news that Del Piero is named in the provisional squad. With a good season surely he deserve a call up for the national squad.

Where have all the top strikers in Italy gone?
It shows the lower quality of S1 that Alex del Piero can still be this season's capocannonieri.

This season's capocannonieri
21 goals - Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus)
20 goals - David Trezeguet (Juventus)
19 goals - Marco Borriello (Genoa)
17 goals - Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Zlatan Ibrahimović (Internazionale), Adrian Mutu (Fiorentina)

Ibrahimović was injured for a few months.

Remember the days when Italy had top strikers such as Batistuta & Shevchenko, now the top strikers are playing in Spain (Ruud, Villa, Eto, Robinho, Henry) or England (Tevez, Rooney?, Drogba, Sheva, Torres) or even Germany (Toni).

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Marco Amelia (Livorno), Morgan De Sanctis (Sevilla)

Defenders: Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan), Christian Panucci (AS Roma), Andrea Barzagli (Palermo), Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcelona), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Fabio Grosso (Lyon)

Midfielders: Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan), Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma), Simone Perrotta (AS Roma), Alberto Aquilani (AS Roma), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina)

Forwards: Luca Toni (Bayern Munich), Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Marco Borriello (Genoa), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese), Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria, on loan from Real Madrid)

Full list of Italy's squad - provisional 24, to be trimmed to 23.

Guess RD is keeping his options open until the last possible minute, and also some leeway for him to turn around. Put Del Piero in now, satisfy the masses, and maybe drop him later?

del piero extraordinary season earned him this just reward... he played a great season and, after having some problems at the beginning, he kept improving, earning once again a place on the team...hope tat he can maintain his superb form and remain in the squad throughout all the matches.... Happy
